Intelligenza artificiale: il caso Altman (OpenAI) svela il classico conflitto (anche molto economico) tra apocalittici e integrati. Proponiamo un approccio complesso.
Altman se n’è andato e ha portato con sé, chissà dove, la sua visione di una intelligenza artificiale che salverà il mondo. Il presunto regista della sua dipartita da OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever (anch’egli guru della ‘prima ora’), vede piuttosto i rischi dell’inarrestabile cammino verso l’intelligenza artificiale ‘generale’: potremo sostituire l’empatia umana ?
Una cosa è certa, per noi pensatori-in-complessità. Il fenomeno dell’intelligenza artificiale, da governare e con classi dirigenti che – pur cogliendo la radicalità delle trasformazioni in atto – in buona parte ancora utilizzano paradigmi da mondo ‘analogico’ (sigh), chiede una nuova architettura di pensiero.
La competizione tra apocalittici e integrati, mentre l’intelligenza artificiale è – oltre a tutto il resto – fatto e fattore geopolitico e di profonda trasformazione del capitalismo, è questione di due ‘Verità’ che si confrontano: ma il problema, secondo noi, è lavorare dentro la ‘terza verità’, in minuscolo.
In un mondo che, via conflitti armati, guerre e tragica evidenza del ‘male banale’, si caratterizza per crescente insostenibilità, viene voglia di difendere l’empatia, la capacità di essere talmente umani per dire all’IA: sei uno strumento importante, molto importante, ma sei pur sempre uno strumento (senza negare ricerche che vanno in direzioni diverse …).
Così, la ‘terza verità’ nasce in una responsabilità che deve nutrisi di tecno-realismo, nell’uscita progressiva da una linearità non più possibile e da uno scontro tra Verità dogmatiche. Quando un processo storico come l’intelligenza artificiale entra e trasforma, senza chiedere permesso, il tema non può più essere affrontato settorialmente o rafforzando i confini: e la regolamentazione, per quanto importante, non risolve. Lo Stato burocratico perde, pressoché inevitabilmente, la partita contro la fluidità e la trasversalità dell’IA. E’ già game over, prima ancora di cominciare.
Il tecno-realismo, ‘terza verità’, significa volerci vedere profondo, nell’oltre. Ben sapendo che, attraverso l’IA, si stanno anche riscrivendo rapporti di potere che superano le nostre vite quotidiane. E’ tempo che la geopolitica non si limiti a ‘passare sopra’: c’è in gioco ben altro, a cominciare dal senso stesso di umanità.

Artificial intelligence: the Altman case (OpenAI) reveals the classic conflict (also very economic) between apocalyptic and integrated. We propose a complex approach.
Altman left and took with him, who knows where, his vision of an artificial intelligence that will save the world. The alleged director of his departure from OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever (also a guru of the ‘first hour’), rather sees the risks of the unstoppable path towards ‘general’ artificial intelligence: will it be able to replace human empathy?
One thing is certain, for us thinkers-in-complexity. The phenomenon of artificial intelligence, to be governed and with ruling classes who – while understanding the radical nature of the transformations underway – still largely use paradigms from the ‘analogic’ world (sigh), requires a new architecture of thought.
The competition between apocalyptic and integrated, while artificial intelligence is – in addition to everything else – a geopolitical fact and factor and a profound transformation of capitalism, is a question of two ‘Truths’ that confront each other: but the problem, in our opinion, is work within the ‘third truth’, in lower case.
In a world which, via armed conflicts, wars and the tragic evidence of ‘banal evil’, is characterized by growing unsustainability, we want to defend empathy, the ability to be so human as to say to AI: you are an important tool, very important, but you are still a tool (without denying research that go in different directions …)
Thus, the ‘third truth’ is born in a responsibility that must be nourished by techno-realism, in the progressive exit from a linearity that is no longer possible and from a clash between dogmatic Truths. When a historical process such as artificial intelligence enters and transforms, without asking permission, the topic can no longer be addressed sectorally or by strengthening borders: and regulation, however important, does not solve it. The bureaucratic State almost inevitably loses the game against the fluidity and transversality of AI. It’s already game over, before we even start.
Techno-realism, ‘third truth’, means wanting to see deeply, in the beyond. Knowing full well that, through AI, power relations that transcend our daily lives are also being rewritten. It is time for geopolitics not to simply ‘pass over’: there is much more at stake, starting with the very meaning of humanity.
